During classification, particular attention must be paid to substances with oxidising properties, flammable substances, corrosive substances, and substances toxic to aquatic organisms. For example, hydrogen peroxide at concentrations above 60% is a strong oxidising agent and requires special storage precautions to avoid contact with organic materials or metal impurities, which can trigger decomposition and the release of oxygen. Similarly, sulphuric acid or sodium hydroxide require protective equipment and separate storage areas due to the risk of corrosion and reactions with other chemicals.

2. Requirements for Storage Areas and Containers

Storage areas for chemicals in the paper industry must meet strict safety, ventilation, and segregation requirements for incompatible substances. The basic rule is the segregation of chemicals according to their properties – for example, oxidising agents must be stored separately from flammable substances, acids from bases, and organic substances from inorganic ones. Storage areas should be equipped with an impermeable floor with drainage to a retention tank to prevent leaks into the environment. It is also important to ensure adequate ventilation, both natural and forced, especially for substances that may release toxic or flammable vapours.

Containers and packaging must be made of materials compatible with the contained chemical and must be clearly labeled in accordance with CLP/GHS. Flammable liquids require the use of grounded metal drums or safety containers with relief valves. In the event of a fire, it is crucial to know the compatibility of extinguishing agents with specific chemicals. For example, water is unsuitable for extinguishing flammable metals or substances that react with water, such as sodium or certain organometallic compounds. Special fire-extinguishing powders or inert gases are designed for these cases. Detection systems, such as fire alarms or toxic gas detectors, should be installed in critical areas and regularly tested. An important part of accident prevention is also the regular maintenance of equipment and inspection of pipeline and vessel tightness to prevent leaks and unexpected reactions.

In the paper industry, where corrosive substances, oxidizing agents, or volatile organic compounds are commonly handled, the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential to minimize health risks. Basic equipment includes chemically resistant gloves (e.g., nitrile or butyl rubber), safety goggles with side shields, and a face shield when working with pressurized liquids. Inspection and Maintenance of Storage Systems to Prevent Leaks and Contamination

Regular inspection and maintenance of storage systems are crucial for preventing leaks, which can lead to fires, explosions, or environmental contamination. Storage tanks and containers should be checked at least once a month for signs of corrosion, cracks, or leaks, especially at welds and joints. For underground tanks, it is necessary to monitor the condition of insulation and cathodic protection to prevent soil seepage. Ventilation systems must be functional and regularly cleaned to prevent the accumulation of vapors or dust.

For liquid chemicals, it is recommended to use secondary containment trays with a capacity of at least 110% of the volume of the largest stored container. These trays must be kept clean and regularly inspected for mechanical damage. For powdered substances, it is important to ensure they are stored in closed systems with dust extraction to prevent the spread of dust into the surroundings. Inspection documentation should include records of maintenance performed, part replacements, and calibration of measuring devices to demonstrate compliance with safety standards during potential inspections.

Employee Training and Cultivating a Safety Culture in Operations

Effective employee training is the foundation for the safe handling of chemicals in the paper industry. Every worker should complete initial training focused on hazard identification, reading safety data sheets (SDS), and proper procedures for handling specific substances. Subsequently, regular refresher training is necessary, ideally every 6–12 months, with an emphasis on current risks and updates in legislation (e.g., changes in REACH or CLP regulations). Practical drills, such as spill or fire simulations, help employees reinforce correct responses in emergency situations.

In addition to formal training, it is important to build a safety culture where every employee understands their role in risk prevention. This includes open communication about safety incidents, even seemingly minor ones, and their analysis to drive improvement. Supervisors should lead by example in adhering to safety rules and actively encourage reporting of potential hazards. Motivation can also come from a reward system for safe behavior or improvement suggestions. Regular safety audits and employee feedback help identify weak points and continuously enhance the level of protection.
