For manufacturers, distributors, and end users of cleaning and detergent products, the SDS is a key tool for ensuring safety during handling, storage, and use. Under the REACH regulation, an SDS must be available for all hazardous substances and mixtures, in the language of the country where the product is placed on the market. In the Czech Republic, it is therefore the supplier's obligation to provide the SDS in Czech.

The SDS is not just a formal requirement—it contains critical data such as hazard identification, first aid instructions, measures in case of spills or fires, and recommendations for safe storage. For buyers and technicians, the SDS is a valuable resource when selecting the appropriate product, assessing risks, and planning employee training. Ignoring this information can lead to serious safety incidents, legal penalties, or financial losses.

Structure of the Safety Data Sheet: How to Navigate the 16 Sections

The Safety Data Sheet is standardized according to the CLP/GHS regulation and consists of 16 mandatory sections covering all aspects of chemical product safety. The first section contains the identification of the substance or mixture and the supplier, including emergency contacts. This is followed by sections dedicated to hazard identification (Section 2), which list classifications under CLP, hazard symbols, and standard hazard (H-phrases) and precautionary (P-phrases) statements.

Section 7 (Handling and Storage), for example, states whether it is necessary to work in well-ventilated areas, use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves or safety goggles, or avoid certain materials (e.g., aluminum with acidic cleaning agents). For strongly alkaline or acidic products, neutralization may be required before disposal.

Section 8 (Exposure Controls/Personal Protection) specifies the maximum permissible concentrations of substances in the workplace air (e.g., for ammonia or chlorine) and the recommended types of protective equipment. For some cleaning agents, it is necessary to monitor employee exposure through regular measurements. Important are also the disposal instructions (Section 13), which highlight the need for separate collection of hazardous waste and the prohibition of mixing with other chemicals.

How to Verify the Currency and Reliability of a Safety Data Sheet

Safety Data Sheets are subject to regular updates, particularly when there are changes in legislation, substance classification, or new scientific findings. Under REACH, suppliers must distribute updated versions of SDS to all recipients who have received the product in the last 12 months. For professional users, it is therefore important to verify the date of the last revision (stated in Section 16) and compare it with current requirements. Older versions of SDS may contain outdated classifications or missing information.

The reliability of an SDS can also be verified by checking the REACH registration number (if the substance is registered) or by referring to the valid CLP regulation. For mixtures, all components with a concentration above 0.1% that contribute to the hazardous properties of the product should be listed. In case of doubt, it is possible to request confirmation of the document's up-to-date status from the supplier or consult independent experts. For companies, it is advisable to maintain internal SDS records and regularly train employees in their use.

Storing Cleaning Agents According to the Safety Data Sheet: Practical Guidelines

The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) contains essential information for the proper storage of chemical cleaning agents, which minimizes the risks of fire, explosion, or contamination. Sections 7 (Handling and Storage) and 10 (Stability and Reactivity) detail the conditions that must be observed. For example, flammable substances such as certain solvents or alcohol-based surfactants must be stored in well-ventilated areas, far from heat sources and open flames. The storage temperature typically ranges between 5–25 °C, although some products require cooling below 15 °C or, conversely, protection from frost.

An important aspect is also the separate storage of incompatible substances. For instance, acids and bases, oxidizing agents and flammable materials must be stored in separate areas or at least at a sufficient distance to prevent hazardous reactions. The SDS often provides specific examples of incompatible substances – for example, hypochlorites must not be stored together with organic acids, as this could lead to the release of toxic gases. Storage areas should be marked with appropriate warning symbols in accordance with the CLP Regulation and equipped with fire extinguishers, absorbent materials, and an emergency shower system.

How SDS Assists in Emergency Response and First Aid

In the event of a spill, fire, or accidental exposure of individuals, the Safety Data Sheet is the primary source of information for effective intervention. Sections 4 (First Aid Measures) and 5 (Firefighting Measures) provide specific instructions on how to proceed in emergency situations. For example, in the case of eye contact with acids or bases, immediate rinsing with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes is usually recommended, followed by seeking medical assistance. For some substances, the use of specific neutralizing solutions may be required, which should be available in the workplace.

For extinguishing fires, the SDS specifies suitable extinguishing agents – for example, in the case of flammable liquids, the use of foam, carbon dioxide, or powder extinguishers is often recommended, while water extinguishers may be unsuitable or even dangerous in some cases. Section 6 (Accidental Release Measures) then describes the steps for the safe disposal of spilled material, including the use of absorbent materials, ventilation of the area, and protective equipment. It is important that this information is easily accessible to all employees, for example, in the form of wall warnings or digital versions of SDS stored on mobile devices.

Environmental Risks and Disposal of Cleaning Agents: What the SDS and Legislation Say

Safety Data Sheets contain key information on the environmental risks associated with cleaning agents, which is essential for their proper disposal and minimizing environmental impact. Section 12 (Ecological Information) and Section 13 (Disposal Considerations) detail the properties of substances, such as toxicity to aquatic organisms, biodegradability, or bioaccumulation potential. For example, some surfactants or phosphates can pollute waterways and disrupt ecosystems if disposed of improperly, so they must be disposed of as hazardous waste in accordance with applicable regulations.

Legislation, particularly the REACH Regulation and the Waste Act, sets out obligations for manufacturers and users of chemical substances. The SDS must include instructions for the safe disposal of packaging and product residues, including contacts for authorized collection points or specialized companies for hazardous waste disposal. In practice, this means that residues of cleaning agents cannot be poured into drains or disposed of as regular waste but must be collected in labeled containers and handed over for professional disposal. Compliance with these instructions not only protects the environment but also safeguards the company from legal penalties and sanctions.
