Choosing the right wood surface treatment is a crucial step in furniture production, affecting not only the appearance but also the durability and functionality of the product. While lacquers create a durable protective film, oils and waxes enhance the natural wood grain and offer easier maintenance. Each category has its advantages and limitations—from mechanical resistance to chemical and moisture resistance. The right choice depends on the type of furniture, its use, and the desired aesthetic effect. Lacquers: Durability and protection for high-stress furniture
Varnishes represent the most durable wood surface finish in furniture making, ideal for pieces exposed to mechanical wear, moisture, or chemicals. Based on solvents, water, or UV-curing systems, they create a hard, transparent, or pigmented film that protects the substrate from scratches, stains, and UV radiation. Water-based varnishes are a more eco-friendly option with lower VOC (volatile organic compound) content, suitable for indoor furniture, while solvent-based varnishes offer higher durability and faster drying—often used for kitchen countertops or commercial furniture.
The varnishing process requires precise surface preparation: sanding up to 220 grit, dust removal, and application of a primer for better adhesion. Varnish is applied with a brush, roller, or spray in 2–3 coats with intermediate sanding using fine-grit sandpaper. For high-gloss furniture, polishing the final coat is key to achieving a mirror-like effect. A disadvantage of varnishes is their lower vapor permeability, which can lead to cracking or peeling in some wood species during humidity changes.
Oils: Natural Appearance and Easy Maintenance for Solid Wood
Oil finishes enhance the natural texture of wood and are popular for solid wood furniture, where an authentic look and tactile feel are desired. Unlike varnishes, they do not seal the surface but penetrate the wood fibers, forming a protective layer resistant to moisture and dirt. The most commonly used natural oils include linseed, tung, or walnut, often enriched with additives to accelerate drying or increase durability (e.g., alkyd-based hardeners).
Applying oil is simpler than with varnishes: the surface is only cleared of dust and the oil is applied with a brush or cloth in the direction of the grain. Excess oil is wiped off after 15–30 minutes to prevent a sticky surface. The advantage is the possibility of local repairs – damaged areas can be easily recoated without the need to sand the entire piece. However, oils require regular maintenance (1–2 times a year) and are not suitable for furniture exposed to intensive wear, such as dining tables or floors.

Waxes: Traditional solution for luxury and antique furniture
Wax finishes are among the oldest methods of wood surface protection and are still used today for luxury and antique furniture, where emphasis is placed on color depth and a matte, silky sheen. Waxes based on beeswax, carnauba wax, or synthetic alternatives create a thin, breathable layer that protects wood from moisture and dust without altering its natural appearance. Unlike oils, they do not penetrate deeply into the structure but remain on the surface, making them easy to remove or restore.
Wax application requires care: after thoroughly cleaning the surface, the wax is applied in a thin layer using a cotton cloth or brush and left to dry (usually 10–20 minutes). The surface is then polished to the desired sheen with a soft cloth or polishing machine. Waxes are temperature-sensitive—at higher temperatures (above 30 °C), they may soften and lose their protective properties. Therefore, they are not recommended for furniture near heat sources or for outdoor use. Their advantage is easy repairability and the possibility of combining them with oils to enhance durability.
How to Choose the Right Surface Finish for Your Furniture Type
The choice between lacquer, oil, and wax depends on the furniture's function, desired appearance, and usage conditions. For furniture subjected to high mechanical stress, such as kitchen countertops, bar counters, or commercial tables, lacquers are the clear choice due to their resistance to scratches, chemicals, and moisture. For solid wood furniture where natural appearance and easy maintenance are priorities (e.g., coffee tables, chairs, or beds), oils are ideal, as they enhance the wood's grain and allow for local repairs.
Waxes are ideal for decorative and antique furniture, where a matte, silky finish and authentic appearance are important. For outdoor furniture or pieces exposed to extreme conditions (e.g., garden furniture), special UV-resistant varnishes or oils with anti-mold additives are recommended. When selecting a finish, ecological aspects should also be considered—water-based varnishes and natural oils/waxes have lower VOC content and are more environmentally friendly, which is particularly appreciated by manufacturers focused on sustainability.

Chemical resistance and degradability of surface finishes
When selecting a wood surface treatment, it is crucial to consider not only mechanical resistance but also chemical stability. Varnishes, especially those based on polyurethanes or acrylates, provide high resistance to water, alcohol, cleaning agents, and weak acids or alkalis. Thanks to their polymer structure, they form an impermeable barrier that prevents aggressive substances from penetrating the wood. This is advantageous for furniture in kitchens, offices, or public spaces, where frequent contact with chemicals is a risk. In contrast, oils and waxes, which penetrate the wood structure, offer lower chemical resistance. They may react with alcohol or strong cleaning agents, leading to dulling, discolouration, or even surface damage. However, the advantage of oils is their easy restorability—damaged areas can be sanded down and re-oiled without the need for a complete renovation.
In terms of biodegradability and environmental impact, oils and waxes clearly have the upper hand. Natural oils, such as linseed or tung oil, are biodegradable and do not contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are often present in synthetic varnishes. Waxes, particularly beeswax or carnauba wax, are also environmentally friendly and, when applied correctly, do not release harmful substances. Water-based varnishes with low VOC content reduce environmental burden, but their production and disposal remain more demanding than those of natural alternatives. Impact of Surface Treatments on the Mechanical Properties of Wood
Surface treatment can significantly influence not only the appearance but also the mechanical properties of wood. Varnishes, particularly two-component systems, increase surface hardness and abrasion resistance, which is essential for furniture subjected to intensive use, such as table tops, flooring, or children’s furniture. Polyurethane varnishes, for example, create an elastic yet durable film that absorbs impacts and prevents scratches. In contrast, oils and waxes tend to preserve rather than enhance the mechanical properties of wood. Oil penetrates the wood fibres and strengthens them from within but does not provide a protective layer against abrasion. While waxes increase resistance to moisture, their surface remains soft and susceptible to damage even with regular use.
For furniture that must withstand dynamic loads, such as chairs, staircases, or worktables, lacquers are clearly the most suitable option. For solid wood with a pronounced texture, where it is desirable to preserve the natural appearance and tactile feel, oils may be a better choice, although they require regular maintenance. Waxes are more suitable for decorative or historical furniture, where mechanical resistance is not a priority, but aesthetics and an authentic appearance are. When choosing, it is important to consider not only the type of wood but also its expected load – for example, oak or ash tolerate oil treatments better than softwoods like spruce or pine.
Application and Maintenance: Practical Tips for Manufacturers and Users
Proper application of the surface finish is just as important as its selection. For lacquers, it is crucial to adhere to the recommended conditions – temperature (usually 18–25 °C), air humidity (40–60 %), and adequate ventilation, especially for solvent-based systems. Before applying lacquer, the wood must be thoroughly sanded and dust removed to avoid unevenness or bubbles in the final layer. For two-component lacquers, the mixing ratio and pot life must be precisely observed; otherwise, insufficient curing or surface stickiness may occur. Oils and waxes are applied with a brush or cloth, and any excess must be wiped off after a certain time to prevent stickiness. For oils, it is important to allow each layer to absorb and dry sufficiently – usually 12–24 hours – before applying the next.
Maintenance of surface finishes varies by type. Lacquered surfaces only need to be regularly wiped with a damp cloth and a mild cleaning agent, but aggressive chemicals or abrasive sponges can damage the film. Damaged lacquer must be sanded and recoated. Oiled surfaces require more frequent renewal – usually every 6–12 months – when a thin layer of oil is applied and any excess wiped off. Waxes need to be renewed even more frequently, ideally every 3–6 months, especially in high-traffic areas. For furniture manufacturers, it is important to provide customers with clear maintenance instructions to extend the product's lifespan and preserve its appearance. In the case of commercial furniture, such as in restaurants or hotels, it is advisable to choose highly durable lacquers to minimize maintenance costs.
