Phosphorus trichloride is a colorless, fuming liquid with a strong characteristic odor that may resemble hydrogen chloride.
From a chemical standpoint, it is a chloride of an inorganic acid. Its reaction with water is immediate and very violent, accompanied by a strong exothermic effect and the release of gaseous hydrogen chloride. Transport and storage should therefore be carried out in tightly sealed containers, protected from moisture or water.
