Phosphorus oxychloride is a colorless liquid with a sharp, very characteristic odor.
It hydrolyzes very readily, which is accompanied by the release of fumes, and the hydrolysis products are phosphoric acid and hydrogen chloride. The reaction of oxychloride with water is very fast. Due to the high exothermicity of the process and the release of large amounts of suffocating hydrogen chloride, transport and storage should take place in tightly sealed containers protected from moisture or ingress of water.
