Tetraethoxyorthosilane (TEOS) is used as a liquid precursor of silica with an SiO2 content of 27-29 %.
The product is used as a crosslinker in silicone rubbers, a desiccant in composites, an additive in adhesives, in organic rubber, as an additive in pigments and paints for anticorrosive coatings, e.g. in zinc paints. TEOS is also used in the production of silica aerogels, which are further used as an excellent material for thermal insulation (λ = 15-25 mW/mK). In the semiconductor industry it is used in integrated circuits to create insulating layers of silica glass.
